We have over the past years often written articles about Ethernet services, their potential, their forecasted growth etc. This time we have decided to focus more on SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, SONET in the US), and to ask us the key question whether SDH end-of-life is now getting closer. This article is based on interviews conducted between June and September 2014 with 27 networks operators active in Western Europe: national incumbents, large carriers active in many countries as well as local regional carriers. In addition, interviews were carried out with seven equipment vendors.
The article first turns on the SDH offer, secondly on the demand, then bringing aspects of production infrastructure, maintenance and technology, to finally reach overall conclusions.
