Top subscription-based TV groups: retention strategies at the forefront in mature pay TV markets

This issue of TS&T focuses on international groups providing TV services. In 1Q13, DirecTV was able to defend its leading position thanks to its excellent performance in Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Venezuela) which exhibited 32% year-on-year growth in 1Q13. Sky Brazil and Sky Mexico also performed well with respectively 25% and 26% annual growth. The overseas operations thus contributed 2.9m additional subscriptions to the group. It should be noted that DirecTV’s Sky Brazil and Mexico are not connected any longer to other companies branded as “Sky". Historically, News Corp. and BSkyB (together with other companies) formed the Brazil and Mexico satellite TV ventures and these were branded as “Sky". DirecTV kept the brand name after buying the stake from the previous shareholders in 2005. Other satellite TV companies where News Corp. is a shareholder are also still branded as Sky, for instance Sky Deutschland.
