At January 1, 1990, the German administrative authority "Deutsche Bundespost" was divided into three distinct companies, responsible for either post, banking or telecom services, the latter being named "Deutsche Bundespost Telekom". Five years later, at the January 1, 1995, this telecom entity changed its name and legal status and became the limited company Deutsche Telekom AG. This opened the way for its going public on November 18, 1996. The German state remained the major shareholder by keeping 74% of the shares. Until mid-2002, the number of shares held directly and indirectly by the state have dropped to 42.77% (12.02% being hold by the KfW bank, owned 100% by the state). Around 22% are in the hands of private shareholder and about 35% are held by various institutions.
