Under the combined pressure of manufacturers which have developed brand new technologies and equipment capable of supporting increasingly high speed rates and of new competitive carriers that are installing high capacity backbones, the question of broadband network access quickly became the bottleneck of the system since all these capabilities are totally useless if the end user cannot access them with the appropriate technology. While the ideal solution was once thought to reside in fibre optic local loops and all their derived solutions, this soon appeared to be quite expensive, for newcomers as well as for incumbents. The latter, in addition, are more interested in getting additional value from their decade-long assets represented by tons of copper buried in their local loops.
