This article aims at giving a snapshot of the payphone markets in 12 European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
Public payphones are typically located on public ways and/or available to the public around the clock, depending on the definition of the national regulator. Private payphones are installed on sites such as camping grounds, hotels or restaurants. Semi-public payphones are generally terminals in transport stations, shopping malls, hospitals or universities, i.e. where the general public has a restricted access.
