Western European operators dangle unlimited voice minutes and heavy discounts to salvage fixed voice market

Based on InfoCom’s quarterly monitoring, the total fixed voice usage in the Western Europe region sustained its downtrend with a 12% YoY decline, closing at 73bn minutes as of end-2019. The said contraction was still due to the growing adoption of OTT voice and messaging applications – although some improvements in fixed voice churns were observed, particularly in markets actively migrating to IP networks. Indeed, in markets like Switzerland and Greece, InfoCom noted some operators remained active in promoting their bundled offers that include IP-based fixed services which partly helped in mitigating the impact of the OTT and mobile voice substitution in the region. For instance, Swisscom offered up to CHF 200 discount to its InOne Home package that includes up to unlimited minutes of calls to all domestic networks, and unlimited minutes to either fixed and mobile networks within the EU, the USA, and Canada. Likewise, OTE Greece offered up to 30% discount to its double-play “Fiberspeed” tariffs that also includes up to 400 minutes for international fixed and mobile networks, alongside unlimited local calls.
