The DOC(SIS) 3.1 is in: German and Spanish operators move forward with cable Gigabit broadband service
InfoCom observed that DOCSIS 3.0 is still the dominantly-used high-speed broadband platform (i.e. DOCSIS, VDSL and FTTP) within the EU5 markets (i.e. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) as of end-2017. However, its share has started to slowly decline due to the increasing take-up of VDSL and FTTP (FTTH + FTTB) services in these markets.
Among the markets covered, both Germany and the UK have the highest shares of DOCSIS 3.0 relative to other high-speed broadband connections, as operators continued to deploy cable broadband networks - some of which have announced trials or even commercially-launch DOCSIS 3.1 already. For instance, in May 2018, German cable operator Unitymedia has officially launched its 1 Gbps broadband service based on DOCSIS 3.1 platform. The said offer, known as "2play FLY 100" tariff, is only available to around 90% of the town of Bochum (around 170k HH) for a standard price of EUR 109.99 per month. Among the operators in the EU5 markets, Unitymedia is the first operator we have noted so far to have commercially launch DOCSIS 3.1.
