Mobile base in Serbia declined for the second consecutive quarter starting 1Q12, this time shedding off 28 ooo subscribers. Mobile penetration rate remained at the 141%-mark.

The decrease in total mobile subscribers is attributed to the quarter-on-quarter decline of 105 000 prepaid subscribers in 2Q12. All three operators' respective prepaid subscribers shrunk, with MTS experiencing the largest quarter-on-quarter decline of 79 000 subscribers during the period. Prepaid share on total mobile base declined by 4 percentage points year-on-year to 65% in 2Q12.

Meanwhile, prepaid-to-contract migration remained evident in 2Q12 as contract subscribers increased by 2% or nearly 77 000. Telenor and VIP Mobile had almost equal contract net additions of 32 000 and 30 000, respectively. The three major operators, including MTS, aggressively capitalised on higher demands for mobile Internet through the sale of modem and smart devices as well as tariff promotions under postpaid.
