Quarterly Mobile Monitoring Service – Western Europe
After a year-long battle with the Austrian Regulator and the EU authorities, to gain approval for the merger, Hutchison 3G Austria (H3G) has completed its acquisition of Orange Austria for EUR 1.3 bn. The acquisition makes H3G the third larget mobile operator in terms of subscribers in the country. Under the terms of the acquisition, H3G sold some spectrum, base stations, intellectual property and mobile provider Yesss! — which has around 740 000 subscribers and one of the largest MVNOs in Austria — to Telekom Austria which agreed to pay up to EUR 390 million for the assets. H3G agreed to provide wholesale access to its network for up to 30% of its capacity to up to 16 MVNOs in the coming 10 years. The condition was already fulfilled when UPC Austria signed an MVNO deal with H3G last October.
Hutchison and Orange Austria were the two smallest operators in terms of subscribers with a combined market share of about 30% as of end-2012: the acquisition consolidates the mobile landscape to 3 MNOs.
