Cameroonian operators ramp-up network deployments in line with the country's 2020 Digital Targets
As of end-2017, InfoCom noted that Cameroon registered 63% and 3% YoY growth in fixed broadband and mobile segments, respectively. The ongoing expansions and upgrades of broadband networks (e.g. copper, FTTH, 4G) in line with the country’s 2020 digital targets drove growth further during the period. For instance, Camtel already achieved 60% of its nationwide 20 000 km fibre optic rollout targets before 2020; while Nexttel, on the other hand, ended the period with more than 80% of the Cameroonian population covered with its mobile data services (e.g. 3G). Note that the operator exhibited one of the fastest subscriber developments (+36% YoY) due mainly to its growing network coverage and increasing popularity of its targeted prepaid offers with generous data allowance. For instance, Nexttel markets the "Boomba Tariff" line (i.e. Boomba Weekend, Red Boomba) to students with up to 9 GB of data allowance depending on the type of the promo. Prices range from XAF 200 to XAF 4 000 (around EUR 0.3 to EUR 6) depending on the services included (e.g. up to 72 hours of free calls, unlimited SMS) and validity (e.g. Boomba Weekend tariff is only valid from Saturday to Sunday only).
