Brazilian pay TV market cools down as SVoD heats up the competition

In the short run we expect that the Brazilian pay TV market will continue to decline along with the contraction in the economy. Indeed video OTT in the form of SVoD will remain a compelling alternative for price-sensitive customers. But we also expect thus that the overall pay TV market will become more dynamic and competitive with new SVoD entrants. As in the Western European market, we may see some telecom players partnering with SVoD players like Netflix in order to beef up their offers. For instance, Nextel, one of the mobile players in Brazil is mulling a distribution partnership with Netflix. Finally, the improvements in the broadband infrastructure will also facilitate further adoption of SVoD services, e.g. Telefonica’s FTTH network expansion in 19 cities in 2017 as well as continuous 4G network upgrades until 2020.
