Fixed broadband in BRICS: Brazil and India calibrate their national broadband targets

Published: 2017-12-01

InfoCom expects fixed broadband subscriptions in BRICS to sustain its growth momentum in the next few years, mainly propelled by the active network deployments especially fibre optics. We expect South Africa and India to lead in terms of growth in this segment, mainly because their subscriptions are coming from a relatively low base compared with the other markets. However, in terms of fibre network deployments, we expect China, Russia and Brazil to remain more aggressive in terms of FTTP adoption since their governments mainly prioritise this technology over xDSL or cable modem. For India and South Africa, we expect that despite the increasing fibre network deployments in their markets, xDSL and cable modem (not for South Africa, since no cable) will remain relatively stable, at least in the short term, due to increasing availability of VDSL, Vectoring or upgraded cable broadband services (DOCSIS 3.0/3.1) capable of offering higher bandwidths.
