Cashless is more: an overview of proximity mobile payments in selected Southeast Asian Markets

The popularity of smartphones has given birth to a gamut of mobile-based services with mobile payment services among them. However, in many markets, particularly in Asia, mobile payment has yet to take off since many still prefer transactions in cash. The large proportion of unbanked population in emerging Asian markets and the additional cost on the side of the merchants hinder its adoption. While mobile payment’s popularity remains limited in many Asian markets like Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, take-up appears to be increasing in China and South Korea.
