Internet access for businesses: main product features overview

Published: 2015-12-18

Internet connectivity is a main requirement for businesses - not only to access the public Internet but also to enable telephony services (i.e. VoIP - Voice over IP) or to establish private networks (e.g. via an IPSec VPN). Hence this article gives an overview on product features and optional services that are currently marketed by Internet service providers (ISPs), including mostly network operators, in 12 countries with a focus on Western Europe (e.g. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, but countries such as China, Poland, Singapore or the USA are also included).

This article examines data-only tariffs (i.e. excluding any telephony, TV or mobile services) based on the access technologies ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line), SDSL (symmetric digital subscriber line, including bonded SDSL and G.SHDSL.bis) and dedicated Internet access (DIA). DIA is defined as symmetrical Internet access with 100% guaranteed bandwidth, most usuallyover SDH or Ethernet. The analysis includes the Internet access portfolio of several providers, including incumbents, multinational providers as well as smaller alternative providers that only operate on national or regional level.
