Current and future developments in the German cable market

With the appearance of bidirectional cable networks enabling to provide Internet and telephony services via DOCSIS, German cable operators have increasingly challenged the established DSL providers over the past ten years. Today cable holds a significant share in the German broadband market and cable operators are further pushing their offers by increasing Internet speeds or launching additional services such as video on demand (VoD) or mobile (via MVNO partnerships). Hence this article gives attention to the current and future developments in the German cable market. At first we briefly describe the German cable market's history explaining the contemporary important role of housing associations. Then we give an overview of the German cable market, introduce the main players and highlight the recent consolidation activities. Furthermore, we describe current technology trends, in particular concerning the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1. We also analyze the cable operators' portfolios for residential and business customers and emphasize the latest trends in these areas.
