Finding the value in LTE VAS – emerging services and subscription models

Published: 2013-06-07

LTE-specific VAS applications or features are not exactly new: some may have been offered already as a 2G or 3G VAS or some were primarily used as desktop PC applications. Many, for instance mobile TV, or radio and video streaming via mobile devices have been around for quite some time albeit enjoying limited success. The most common LTE VAS offered by mobile carriers are multimedia contents (e.g. video-based services, gaming, one-stop portals and joyn). Some also offer storage, backup and location-based services (LBS). Currently, most offers target residential users.

Generally speaking, LTE VAS (e.g. mobile TV, streaming audio and video content, etc.) demand fast Internet connection for optimum performance. Even the IP messaging platforms (such as joyn, WhatsApp, Viber, etc.) require fast Internet connection to support mobile VoIP, video calling or file shares/transfers. Compared to 3G, LTE is more capable in supporting these applications because it can deliver higher throughput and ensure lower data latency and interference. Operators therefore bank on LTE to finally take these bandwidth-intensive applications to mass market adoption as smartphone and tablet continue to enjoy increasing take-up.
