This article identifies major FDIs (foreign direct investments) in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) telecom market – excluding Brunei and Myanmar in particular highlighting foreign telecom companies strategies in the region.
Of 41 analysed telecom operators in member-countries of the ASEAN, almost half, i.e. 20, operate under one or more FDIs each to a total of' 32 FDIs. Please note that T-Systems and Verizon operate in more than one country and that each country of operation, as long as it is not the originating country, is counted as one FDI. Only 9 of' the 32 identified FDIs originate from companies headquartered within ASEAN while 23 come from Asia (excluding ASEAN), the US and Western Europe combined.
