With mobile penetration rate reaching 132% of the UK population at end-2011, more than 80 active mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the country continue to find their way into niche markets. In 2011, MVNOs in the UK accounted for 9% of the 82.2 million mobile customers (Fig. 1). A majority of MVNOs in the UK originated from existing telecom services providers (telcos) worldwide while others are owned by equipment manufacturers, IT service companies and retailers, among others (Fig. 2: based on a sample size of approximately 25% of total MVNOs in the UK).
