The Vietnam TV landscape: free-to-air viewing still preferred while CaTV dominates subscription-based TV

The economic expansion and liberalisation of the Vietnamese market present opportunities for the TV market in the coming years. More foreign players, such as for instance Deutsche Telekom, are expected to enter due to the government’s plan to further open the telecoms sector to foreign companies by 2012. This mandate will then allow foreign companies involved in a telecoms joint venture to hold more than 49% ownership, the current maximum interest limit. In addition, Vietnam and the EU are currently finalising a trade agreement that, once approved, should lead to increased European investment in the country.
