Country snapshot: Brazil An emerging giant in the global telecom industry

Composed of 26 states and one federal district (Brasilia), Brazil is the fifth most populous nation in the world (over 193.1 million inhabitants in 2008) and the fifth largest country by geographial area (more than 8.5 million square kilometres), occupying nearly half of South America. Forests make up more than 60% of the country, including the tropical rain forest Amazonia in the Amazon Basin.

Brazil is one of the fast-developing economies in the world along with China, India and Russia. Coupled with its large population and ongoing industrialisation, Brazil is expected to become one of the leading countries in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, service and telecommunication sectors.
