Personalised TV means also personalised advertising...but don't tell it too loud

Introduction

By now it is clear to everyone that telecom operators can leverage their broadband access networks and customer base with IPTV as an additional entertainment service in order to retain customers and offset losses from legacy fixed services. While many IPTV offers are currently still similar to cable or satellite, i.e. provide a wide selection of channels and some on-demand videos, the differentiating factor of IPTV lies in the customisation and interactive possibilities of the IP platform, e.g. time-shift programmes, VCR functionality, multiple programmes and an increasing amount of on-demand content, not to talk about all the available video content from the Internet that users can watch comfortably on their TV instead of on the PC.
