In line with a strategy to re-focus on its core telecommunications business, Alcatel introduced substantial structural changes in 1998, which facilitated consolidation of its new organisation during 1999. Through a combination of expansion, cost cutting and consolidation of its portfolio, Alcatel has streamlined its power, transport and industry sectors, consolidated its defence business, as well as re-organised its satellite activities. Furthermore, Alcatel has pursued a strategy of acquisition of telecommunications companies active in the business areas that would complete and enhance Alcatel's portfolio. In a further effort to adapt its structure to the fast changing conditions of the market, the French manufacturer again re-organised in 2000 its businesses to better concentrate on its core activities. As the transition into a new organisation is completed and the recent acquisitions are integrated, the next step will be for the re-structuring efforts to deliver the solid growth period wished by the manufacturer.
