Revenue by service category
As illustrated by Fig. 1 for the 1998-2001 period, revenues from telecom services in France keep steadily growing. The total value of the service market was €30 billion in 2001, a 14% growth over the previous year. The highest increase in 2001 was 79% for Internet access services, a category, however, which remains a very small part of the market, with €0.7 billion in 2001, i.e., 2% of the total amount. The highest growth over the 4-year period corresponds to mobile telephony, with a 146% increase to €12.1 billion in 2001. This trend brings mobile telephony at more than 40% of the total service market, from 23% in 1998, not so far from the 49% of fixed telephony. Total revenues of €30 billion work out an average monthly expense of €42 per inhabitant in 2001.
