The World Top-20 operators

Japanese operator NTT still holds the top position in the World as the largest operator of telecommunications service in 2001 (Fig. 1). NTT recorded revenues of over US$70 billion, well ahead of the runner-up, US operator Verizon - totalling about US$55 billion. The third position is held by the Chinese operator China Telecom with US$48.7 billion demonstrating a revenue increase of nearly 30% p.a. in the period between 1995-2001 and climbing up from the fifth position held in 2000. AT&T follows closely with US$48.5 billion in front of SBC (ranked third in 2000), with US$47.3 billion.
