What does the Internet economy's future hold? Many present the Network as a protean platform able to foster a whole new range of applications, from mass entertainment to ubiquitous and customised service delivery.
Even though the matrix did not create these new applications and possibilities over the past decades, operators have been considering such technologies as Video On Demand fibre-based then ADSL networks, electronic data exchange networks, proprietary services networks, etc. - the Net has potentially very strong assets: its pervasiveness and its openness, not only in terms of networking standards, but also in terms of supported applications.
Thanks to these assets, applications and usages, which had been only brainstormed and implied a network far too expensive to deploy, could be within reach. Becoming the unique support-all medium - including voice - is the challenge for the Internet: this would revolutionise the information transport business by turning it into a commodity.
