Mobile telephony in the US

Published: 2009-03-04

In the US, mobile telephony services are provided by three main categories of operators: cellular operators, Personal Communications Service (PCS) providers and, to a certain extent, digital Specialised Mobile Radio (SMR) operators.

Note that statistics gathered at the national level in the US often take into account the total of mobile telephony users, including those of the two digital SMR operators Nextel and Southern Company, which are from the technology side public trunked mobile radio service providers.

In 1998, the US market reached 69.2 million mobile telephone users, compared to 55.3 million users one year ago. In terms of penetration per 100 inhabitants the US market achieved a 26% penetration rate in 1998, 5 points more than at the end of 1997.
