Video OTT in Brazil is gaining as Netflix’s popularity soars

Netflix has been blamed as one of the culprits for the declining traditional pay TV customer base and probably rightly so as unofficial numbers place the number of Brazil’s Netflix subscriptions at between 5m to 6m – already about 30% of the entire Western European Netflix base (estimated at 18.6m at end-2016). As per InfoCom’s analysis, Netflix’s pricing is very competitive and cheaper than what the traditional pay TV players are offering at BRL 19.90 (€5.29) for the entry-level plan to BRL 37.90 (€10.07) per month for the premium plan. Beside pricing, content is compelling for Brazilian viewers with popular shows like Narcos, House of Cards, etc. as well as investments in original production intended for Brazilian audience, i.e. an eight-part science- fiction series called "3%" launched in late 2016. Due to the popularity and Neflix’s pricing, the traditional pay TV market has seen a trend in pay TV subscription discontinuations in favour of Netflix.
