Quarterly Broadband Monitoring Service
In 1Q13, Ireland’s telecom regulator, ComReg, decided that Eircom should allow alternative operators to have access to its fibre optic network. This is after ComReg concluded that the telecom incumbent holds a significant market power (SMP) in the Wholesale Physical Network Infrastructure Access and Wholesale Broadband Access. Eircom, for its side, welcomed the decision and showed interest in cooperating via wholesale access to its fibre infrastructure. Eircom intends to invest €400m in its fibre network and plans to reach 1m homes-passed in 5 years.
It is expected that this regulatory decision will prove beneficial in the fibre broadband service market in Ireland in terms of number of accesses as well as price reduction. This considering, it is expected that FTTx broadband subscriptions in Ireland will grow at around 11% (CAAGR) a year from 2012 to 2017.
