Mobile broadband gains ground

At the end of the year 2012, 1 out of 4 broadband accesses in Europe (EU-27 including Norway and Switzerland) was a mobile broadband connection (USB modems and datacards only). This means that mobile broadband reached a penetration per household of about 22%, up by 2.6 percentage points from the year before. Despite mobile broadband is growing, in most of the European countries the penetration of fixed broadband is still higher than mobile broadband. The Finnish market represents, though, a standout. The country is mobile-centric in terms of connections: it has around 2.5m mobile broadband connections, while its fixed broadband connection is only around 1.6m. In average, since 2008, fixed broadband connections have been growing less than 1% (1Q08, QoQ), while mobile broadband grew at around 17%.

In Europe, mobile broadband continues to exhibit double digit growth thanks also to price competition and prepaid offers as well as a steady expansion of the LTE base around the region to serve the demand for fast mobile broadband connections. Given this, it is expected that the mobile broadband penetration per household will reach around 30% by year 2017.
