The German cable operators are further challenging established DSL providers, especially with their competitive triple play offers enabling much higher download bandwidths (up to 400 Mbit/s) than VDSL and VDSL Vectoring. Thus the market share of cable broadband, today already at 20%, will further increase. In addition cable operators start to increasingly address business customers (in particular SOHO) with cable-based products.
The launch of DOCSIS 3.1 will further strengthen these trends as it enables to offer cable broadband products with higher bandwidths (1 Gbit/s and above), QoS and guaranteed bandwidth, including VPN products for businesses. We expect that the first services based on DOCSIS 3.1 will be already launched in 2016 with the majority of operators following in 2017.
In respect of network expansion, there is a clear trend towards fibre as cable operators are virtually only deploying new connections based on FTTB/H and are also replacing their traditional HFC networks with fibre. This will enable cable providers to offer advanced fibre-based business products in the long run.
